Wine Jenga... Spanish style!

When Winemaker Chris Ringland
stopped by the shop a few months back, I asked him
"How high will they go?"
Since 2002 these beautiful dark blends of old-vine Monastrell and Cabernet Sauvignon have
ranged from 91 to 97 points and always sell out.
But the critics have not yet tasted the '12s.  I always like to buy them before the press hits... once again this year FranksWine is the only wine merchant in Delaware to get the El Nido wines!

Production is down by 10% for the 2012s and the prices are up a tad, but I kept prices the same as last year.   Given the production level it's predicted that despite the price increase, demand will be greater than the availability.

So now's the time to buy before the hype heats up. Whatever the scores, you'll be safe that this will be one of the finest Monastrells (Mourvedre in the Rhone) you've ever tasted.  Clio is often compared to Chateauneuf du Pape... I find that all the great Spanish Monastrell come from Jumilla in the heart of Spain and are thick, slippery and full of licorice and spice, more like what Priorats are to ordinary Grenache. As usual the El Nido Clio is more Monastrell than Cabernet with more bang for less buck.  For those who demand the best, the
El Nido El Nido is double the pleasure, with Cabernet Sauvignon in the majority and Monastrell filling out the palate... olé!

What a power tasting it was with Chris Ringling!  These wines have deep flavors and an endless finish. You can't understand the Spanish wine of today without tasting at least one El Nido. You're gonna want that.

About Bodegas El Nido

Bodegas El Nido is a 100-acre estate in the Valle de La Aragona, in the Jumilla region of Spain. It was founded in 2002 and is a collaboration between the renowned Australian winemaker Chris Ringland and the Gil Family. Grapes grown are Monastrell and Cabernet Sauvignon. Two wines are produced, the Clio, which is 70% Monastrell and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the flagship wine, El Nido, which is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Monastrell. About 5,000 bottles of El Nido are produced annually. Wine Advocate has consistently rated both the Clio and El Nido in the high 90s.

Winemaker's Notes ~ 2012 Not Yet Reviewed
Dark cherry red color in the glass. Intense nose of ripe fruits and confit fruit mixed with sensations of toasted coffee and licorice which bring finesse and elegance. Strength, flesh, savory and opulence combine in the palate of this wine that little by little develops in the bottle.
  • Critical Acclaim ~ 2011 Vintage

    • WS91
Wine Spectator - "Blackberry, cocoa, licorice and toast notes are rich and expressive in this thick, syrupy red. Well-integrated tannins and balsamic acidity lend structure. Exhibits good concentration, in the modern style. Monastrell and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2021."

  • Winemaker's Notes  ~ 2012 Not Yet Reviewed

The El Nido begins with cherry color in the glass. On the nose, prevalent aromas of leather, toasted bred and ripe fruits mixed with a touch of spices. It results in an intense, concentrated and complex, a little bit sophisticated and with resources to meditate on its extraordinary richness of extract and savor.

    Critical Acclaim ~ 2011 Vintage

    • WS94
Wine Spectator - "This powerful and energetic red has a muscular structure that delivers rich flavors of currant, tobacco, anise, espresso and loamy earth. Finds a balance between ripe fruit and big tannins, and culminates in a smoky, spicy finish. Best from 2015 through 2025."

Here's a face you'll never forget...

Every face tells a story

"Art is the child of nature in whom we trace the features of the mothers face."

                                - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

In this case the "art" is grape, the "child" is the vine and the "mother's face" is that of the grower.
Look at these guys.

Go ahead.  Take a long and hard look.
I see trust.  I see passion.  I see hard work.  I see three dudes who can grow some pretty ridiculous Tinta de Toro aka Tempranillo.  What do you see?

Here's one more face to look at.  Here, I see genius.  He's the rockstar winemaker who deals with those three  Spanish farmers pictured above.

His name is Raul Acha.  He belongs to the current generation of a family that has been linked to the world of wine for over two centuries.  Raul was born in La Rioja, where he has lived surrounded by vineyards since his childhood.  He defines himself as a winegrower, and in his philosophy, as in his ancestors', he defends the vineyard as the main source of quality for wine.

Spain's wine region Toro has two ingredients that have always attracted the attention of Raul.   On the one hand, it is an area that traditionally has not interfered with the vineyard too much.  On the other hand, there are old vineyards of extraordinary quality.

 All Organic...

Thanks to the climate conditions, with low humidity, and sandy soils there is no need to apply any chemical treatments to avoid diseases as other places do.  This may have contributed to the tradition of respecting the pace and allowing nature to play its role.  The tradition is such that there is a firm commitment to organic wines and biodynamic agriculture.  This philosophy matches Raul Acha's perspective to perfection.

As you'll see below Raul Acha was so impressed with his growers fruit that he threw their faces on his wines!  The bottle labels are used in a very clever and innovative way to show you the age of the vines from the Matsu Vineyards.

Roughly translated El Picaro means "the rogue" or "cheeky one" (vines 90 years old);  El Recio "the tough one" (90-100 years); and El Viejo "the old one" (vines 100+ years old).

Take a Drive to FranksWine on North Union Street TODAY to taste this Toro trio from 11am to 3pm. We'll have a selection of Spanish Cheeses, Charcuterie, Spreads, Flatbreads & Sexy Olives from our DiBruno Bros section!   The FranksWine crew will pouring the same  lineup on Sunday from 12noon to 4pm!

COST?  It's free... yup nada, we're cool like that.

100% Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo)
Alcohol content 14.5% abv

Vineyards
Selection of 90 year old vineyards of limited production and cultivated using the biodynamic techniques.

Tasting Notes
This wine has a great robe and a profound color, an expression of its young age. It has an intense aroma where you'll find dark fruits such as blackberries and blueberries, mineral notes also appear, creating this fresh wine with complexity.  On the palate again this wine dominates the fruitful sensations, perceived as a wine with body; though at the same time its leaves pleasant licorice notes contributed by the maturity of the grapes from which this wine is made.

Matsu 2011 El Recio
 Regularly Priced at $29.99
$20.99 with 6-pack Sampler Case Purchase!

100% Tinta del Toro (Tempranillo)
Alcohol content 14.5% abv

Vineyards
Selection of 90 to 100 year old vines of extremely limited production, naturally cultivated following the biodynamic techniques.

Winemaking
Unfiltered.  Fermentation and maceration for a duration of 3 weeks in reinforced concrete tanks.  The malolactic fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, as well as its ageing for a duration of 14 months.  968 cases produced.

Tasting Notes
This is an opulent wine that shows a lot of finesse, with an intense nose having notes of chocolate, black fruits and vanilla.  In the mouth the taste is striking, being predominantly round and silky, very unctuous with subtle hints of the glycerine.  Touches of red fruits linger in the after taste as do mineral notes.  This is a full body wine yet at the same time very easy to drink.

Matsu 2010 El Viejo
Regularly Priced at $49.99
$34.99 with 6-pack Sampler Case Purchase!

100% Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo)
Alcohol content 15% abv

Vineyards
Selection of Century old vineyards of very limited production, cultivated according to the biodynamic technical standards.

Winemaking
Unfiltered.  Fermentation and maceration during 3 weeks in reinforced concrete tanks. The malolactic fermentation takes place in new French oak barrels, as its aging during 16 months.  480 cases produced.

Tasting Notes
A deep cherry color with violet colored notes in its border. Thanks to the barrel aging the wine acquired a very intense nose with mature black fruit aromas, well integrated with the toasted, spiced and smoked notes. Lush and velveted in the mouth with very mature and round tannins that give its sweetness.  In the long and persistent finish appear once again mature fruit perfectly assembled with the roasted character of the wood.

94 Points from PARKER!

Robert Parker's taster for Spain, Neal Martin, awards the wine 94 points placing it alongside wines from Toro that are up to four times more expensive than El Viejo!

Martin said "this is undoubtedly a sophisticated Toro red to which I am sure the elderly gentleman on the label would approve". "It does have a beautifully defined bouquet, the oak assimilated into the pure dark berry fruit with style and class. The palate is smooth and caressing on the entry, building succinctly in the mouth towards a cashmere finish of licorice-tinged dark berries, spices and cloves".

How to get lucky on Valentine's Day...

Start with a bottle of Ruinart
... the rest is up to you.

No doubt this is the sexiest bottle of Champagne in the biz.  And it's no coincidence that the bubbly inside is just as sexy causing an aphrodisiac-like spark in romance.  Or maybe it's just the guy in me that seems to think so or hope that's the case.  Either way it's worth a shot... and if you don't get lucky?   Sorry, no money-back guarantees, but at least you'll get to drink a damn good bottle of Champagne.

Also available in a Rosé expression for an even sexier response or desire.  You can thank me later <3 p="">

Never heard of Ruinart?

Founded in 1729, Ruinart is the oldest Champagne house but, in 1946, they were on the verge of disappearing. The two World Wars had not been kind to them. They owned a mere 42 acres of vineyard, had a meager 800 cases of wine in their cellars, and just two customers, both in Paris - the grand restaurant, Maxime's, and an up-scale cafe, Le Sphinx.  Pretty amazing that the winery survived.

Rebuilding was slow, and the Ruinart family, lacking resources, concentrated on the domestic market where today it's a respected brand. It also ranks somewhere in the mid-teens in world sales, but is barely known in America.
Now owned by the luxury goods conglomerate LVMH, it has been overshadowed by company's larger names: Dom Pérignon, Moet & Chandon and Veuve Clicquot. This is not necessarily an oversight - with it's distinctive style and small production it's not suited to the high profile marketing efforts deployed by the marquis names, "Five years ago we were barely in the US market" Chef du Cave Frédéric Panaiotis explained during a recent tasting of Ruinart's impressive lineup of cuvées.

Not wanting to be too dependent on the French market, they have recently launched an expansion of their American presence. A discrete expansionNo supermarkets or nightclubs, and they're steering well clear of Vegas. What they're aiming for is placement in select restaurants and specialty wine shops, the sort of outlets that afford exposure to discerning consumers with sophisticated, developed palates who pay more attention to what's in the bottle than on the label... and Ruinart chose FranksWine!

Ruinart Blanc de Blanc NV
100% Chardonnay

Dark pink, almost scarlet at the moment, but this is a recent release and with time, just a few months, will evolve into a more typical pale salmon. Redolent of cherries and strawberries, perfect with charcuterie, think Abruzzese Soppressata... which you can get here at FranksWine!

Christmas in Piemonte!

Christmas in Piemonte!

Boy that sounds great doesn't it?!  With all the craziness of the holidays I couldn't think of a better place to be than Piemonte, Italy.  No need for the grapes to hanging on the vines as long as my goblet is topped off with Barbera and Nebbiolo.

Wishful thinking.

Yes I'm still stuck here on North Union Street peddling wine, beer, and booze for the holidays.  But I have something special planned for Saturday afternoon here at FranksWine...

In preparation for the sure-to-sell-out FranksWine Piemonte Game Dinner at Wilmington's newest go-to hotspot Bistro Jacques on Saturday, January 24th we will be pouring the entire lineup of wines that Jacques Macq and I chose to be featured at the dinner.

Gina Pio of Pio Cesare Wines will be here at FranksWine on Saturday from 12noon - 4pm pouring her lineup of these precious Piemonte wines!

I consulted with Emilio Mignucci last week while he was here at our Cognac Tasting and House of Cheese book signing, and together we paired cheeses and other foodstuffs from our DiBruno Bros section to go with the five wines that Gina will be pouring at our in-shop complimentary tasting!

Elmo Pio NV Prosecco
Regularly Priced at $11.99 per bottle
$9.19 with 10 pack Sampler Case!
Elmo Pio, Importer - 1919 - 1996
Son to an Italian winemaker, Elmo Pio's passion for wine was deeply rooted. As a boy, he hand filled bottles of his father's wine, and sold them face to face. Elmo experienced first hand the importance of delivering quality. In the late 1960's, Elmo drew upon his vast wine knowledge to select and import his own line of fine Italian wines, marketed by the man himself, in his trademark hat. Elmo's commitment to quality lives on in the bottles that carry his image and name.  Elmo's son Bart is now holding the reigns of the biz and I finally met him after 28 years, great guy!

Prosecco is a traditional Italian sparkling white, produced in the Veneto region in the picturesque hills above Venice. Prosecco is Italy's answer to refreshing, well-made, sparkling wine made with 100% Galera grapes.  Effervescent with a light creamy flavor and crisp acidity.  This versatile extra dry wine can be served as an aperitif or to finish a meal. It pairs well with light dishes, or when combined with fresh peach juice to make Venice's most famous cocktail, the Bellini.

Pio Cesare 2013 Arneis
Regularly Priced at $24.99 per bottle
$19.29 with 10 pack Sampler Case!

100% Arneis sourced from very select vineyards in the hills of Barolo and Barbaresco.  This is the king of white winesin the Piemonte!  Fermentation takes place at a low temperature in stainless steel fermenters with extensive lees contact which give the wine it's great weighty mouthfeel.  Then it's pumped over into stainless steel tanks until bottling is made in March after the harvest.  Slightly aromatic with peach and freshly-cut lime it's round, refreshing and crunchy minerality. Pleasant to drink... actually it's freakin' really pleasant to drink!  Best to be consumed young, 2 to 3 years maximum.

Pio Cesare 2010 Oltre
Regularly Priced at $29.99 per bottle
$22.99 with 10 pack Sampler Case!
"Oltre" is Italian for "in addition to." In addition to the Barbera grape variety, this wine is produced with Nebbiolo and a small amount of Cabernet and Merlot grapes grown on the family-owned vineyards in the Barolo and Barbaresco areas. This is a modern, 100 percent estate-grown wine. This wine is aged for 30 months, 50 percent in new mid-toasted French oak barrels from Allier region and 50 percent in 20 to 50 hectoliter French casks.  This is my favorite of the lineup... I love how modern it is!

Pio Cesare 2012 Barbera d'Alba
Regularly Priced at $24.99 per bottle
$19.29 with 10 pack Sampler Case!

This 100% Barbera comes from the Pio Family owned vineyards in Serraluga d'Alba (Ornato and Colombaro), in Sinio, Diano d'Alba and Grinzane Cavour together with other vineyards belonging to "historical suppliers" who have been selling their grapes to Pio Cesara for generations, working their vineyards according to our directions and strict quality controls.  After harvest the juice spend 15 days of skin contact in stainless steel temperature controlled fermenters.  Then it's transferred to French oak for 18 months... 30% in mid toasted barriques and 70% in 20 to 50 hectoliters casks.  The Barbera grapes grown in the Barolo area, give full structure, plummy and complexflavor, with spicy and ripe fruit, blackberry aroma and a hint of toasted tobacco.  It ages quite well, 15+ years but I know you won't wait that long!

Elmo Pio NV Brachetto d'Acqui
Regularly Priced at $11.99 per bottle
$9.19 with 10 pack Sampler Case!

The growing popularity of sweet red wine has prompted many wine companies to create sweet reds that are a blend of many different grapes with added sugar and sometimes other flavors... that's a pretty shitty thing to do.  Not so with Elmo Pio!  Their Sweet Red isn't a blend at all, it's 100% Italian Brachetto d' Acqui grapes.  This grape, grown in the Piemonte region of Italy, is renown for it's fruity flavor and unmistakable aromas of rose petals.
Similar to Moscato, Brachetto has a touch of frizz ante.  Because of the lighter alcohol content (7%) this wine is bright and has a deliciously fresh fruity taste with aromas of black raspberry and black cherry.  Enjoy with  fresh fruit desserts or chocolates... or Black Lava Cashews from our DiBruno Bros section!   And if you enjoy somewhat spicy foods, this is a must... bring on the Thai!

Minervois Madness!

MINERVOIS
MADNESS!

Pat, Susan and I recently tasted through a lineup ofinsanely delicious Minervois reds with Jeff and Debra from one of our smaller wine suppliers - Lanterna.

I know when I see Jeff Sarfino walk through the door with a wine bag we're gonna taste the good shit!  He doesn't waste our time - ever - with mediocre wines of which I have no interest.

Minervois is my new favorite wine region for big, gutsy reds that you want to drink in the Fall and Winter months.  This area which is part of Languedoc - Roussillon is located in the countryside west of Montpellier.  To enter this wine country choose to drive through the beautiful fortified town of Carcassonne.  Going north you will feel like as if you were in Tuscany with wide open landscapes filled with olive trees and vines in a limestone soil.

The winery is Chateau Sainte Eulalie located near the Canal du Midi.  Here the sun, exposure, climate and soil types have come together to give life to these unique wines.

Minervois red wines are deep and rich.  Most of the time Syrah prevails, but when old Carignan are found there they can be the prominent grape.  Blended with Grenache and Mourvèdre, a light barrel aging will let them soften their tannins.

If you like licorice you will enjoy Minervois wines. I like to say that they remind me of those black sticks that I loved as a kid.  I think it's so cool when you can put your nose into a glass and childhood memories shoot into your head!

Vinification
